Glasses for sports
Sports and high-performance frames, which suit every situation, even the most extreme ones. For fitness or tennis, at the seaside or on snow, sunglasses are a more and more indispensable and stylish accessory.
To leave behind one’s shoulders sun, sea and holiday is hard. But there is something we can carry with us: the energy. After being recharged, we are ready to face winter. And it is with the same dynamic vitality of a beach-volley game, of a sail or a swim to the horizon that these trends take place.
Accessories that reflect the desire for vivacity which characterises every sport activity… what’s more, moving is a good thing to do all year round!
This is the reason why sunglasses have become one of the principal components of every respectable sports equipment: trekking, running, skiing and so on.
Each sport has its ideal frame. And Arnette knows it, since -among the others- it has created really light sunglasses, with thin black acetate temples, black bridge and dark lenses, which have been thought particularly for young and active men.
Also Adidas knows it, given that for the creation of the multi-sports model, it has taken into account a myriad of factors, the sight first of all. Its name (from Latin “agile”) summarises a series of technologies, among which LST (Light Stabilizing Technology) filters, Bluefilters which function as a shield against waves irradiating energy -called “Blue light”- and protect the eye from permanent damages to the macula;
besides, lenses can be quickly and easily changed thanks to the "Quick Change Lens System"carried out by Adidas eyewear.

The colour in sports glasses

Target-shooting and similar sports

Lenses highlighting contrasts are necessary for target-shooting in order to enhance target visibility and attenuate backgrounds.
It is really important to take into consideration the kind of shooting, the target and the background.
For example, hunting usually takes place at dawn or in autumn/winter, when light conditions are poor.
The most useful colours, in this case, are yellow or amber as they lay emphasis on the visual area, beside highlighting contrasts.
Regarding target-shooting or clay-pigeon shooting, the range of colours is wide. It is necessary to choose the colour of the target and then strengthen it.
Orange, for instance, is used to strengthen a clay-pigeon in the outdoors, while violet is best suited to highlight it in a green background.
Brown is again the best choice when light is intense, above all in the open air. For shooting sports, as well as for any other sport activity, not only the choice of colour is determinant, but also that of density.
In poor light conditions, it would be better if the density of the lenses colour were reduced in order to allow a greater transmission of the light. Even polarized lenses, available in a wide range of colorations, present different level of chromatic density.

The Italians are careless when they buy sunglasses 3/3

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

The Italias are careless when they buy sunglasses.

1.700.000 pairs of counterfeited sunglasses have been impounded in Italy just over the last two years, which is an exorbitant but at the same time limited figure, if one considers the amount of unlawful glasses that still stays on the market.
As well as clothing, bags, shoes, food and even toothpaste industry, the invasion of products that do not observe safety standards is affecting also the optics field, becoming more and more alarming and making it necessary for the final consumer to be better informed.
“The present Italian market is literally invaded by unlawful and often counterfeited sunglasses,” Massimo Dona, Secretary-General of the National Consumer Union, states, “for example, a lot of sunglasses with a fake CE trademark -which the consumer identifies as a seal of quality- come from China.
The types are different from those fixed by the European Community - for Chinese people, the mark CE means China Export-, but the consumer thinks that the product is according to law.
To verify the inadequacy of sunglasses that do not respect the regulations in force is the first step to protect the consumer’s health.
It is then necessary to rely exclusively on guaranteed products by verifying the certification of the explanatory notes that illustrate the correct use and the protection level and that must be enclosed to each high-quality glasses and this can be found only in professional shops, that is at the optics’ or optometrist’.

The colour of lenses in sports glasses

Cycling and skating

Cyclists and skaters’ needs are rather similar to skiers’ ones. It is necessary to reduce light reflection, but it is important as well to identify water or oil on the road.
Mirror treatments have the double advantage of reducing reflections and infra-red radiation, eliminating the irksome heat accumulation beyond the lens, particularly in case of wrapping frames, which represent one of the latest trends.
For this kind of sports, brown and copper tones, which highlight the contrast, improve the perception of road or footpath surfaces in high light conditions.
Even in this case, yellow is the most suitable colour in poor light conditions and is very good for increasing the contrast.

Sunglasses: careless purchases.
The opinion poll that has been recently carried out by the Sight Defence Commission has confirmed that the suggestion of cheap sunglasses -which more than often are not according to law and do not protect from ultra-violet rays- prevails over the awareness of having to look for quality: this is what Massimiliano Dona, General Secretary of the National Consumer Association comments on.
In particular, he highlights the huge difference between what one should do -that is, choosing the glasses thanks to the help of a professional optic or optometrist- and what most young people actually do.
Their purchases are often dictated by the superficiality that leads the young to buy and wear fake and low-quality glasses instead of guaranteed and certified ones.
When buying outside of the professional field, indeed, it is easy to come across metal frames which contain more nickel than it is allowed by law -and that, consequently, cause allergies- or lenses that, irrespectively of their colour, do not protect from sun rays and, instead of having positive effects, can damage the eyes, since prevent them from accomplishing even that little natural protection which they are capable of.
Even if the idea of buying glamorous sunglasses -maybe the imitation of a famous brand- at giveaway prices, can sound as an occasion, the damages caused by counterfeited glasses can be really serious: anomalous conditions, such as optic aberrations -with the consequent image distortion or unwanted prismatic effects- may happen, as Maria Antonietta Blasi, professor at the Ophthalmological Clinic of the University of Aquila and counsellor of the Sight Defence Commission, informs us.
All this can result in a serious reduction of the visual capacity and the alteration of colour perception –a dangerous situation above all for drivers, who expose the eye to UV rays.
Besides, frames materials, if not according to law, can cause serious allergies: "Glasses frames must be made from safe and certified materials,"Massimo Trevisol, optic and optometrist, expert of the Sight Defense Commission, explains "otherwise they can produce serious trouble and allergic reactions of various kinds".
At the same time, it is not unusual that the glasses bought at the stalls or from pedlars are even counterfeited, as far as the brand or the model is concerned, and that, in addition to possible sight damages, they are injurious also to the economy.

The importance of lenses in sports glasses

Water sports

As far as water sports are concerned, polarization is the best solution to contrast the light which is reflected by the water surface.
Although neutral grey lenses are suitable for various activities on boat, fishermen need polarized lenses with specific colorations according to different kinds of fishing.
The lenses that increase the contrast, for example, allow to spot out small colour differences and to locate fish in swallow and seaweed-rich waters.
The contrast is absorbed by identifying the colour of the object which needs to be highlighted and making the colour of the lens equal to that of the object. The colour of the object will be brighter.
Another solution is to make the lenses of the colour of the background. The colour will be more powerful, so the specific features of the object which has to be located will appear more clearly.
Grey lenses are particularly suitable for the spotting of dark fish and are ideal for deep-water fishing. Brown lenses, instead, lay emphasis on seaweed-rich water floors.
Since fishing is usually a day activity, high-contrast polarized photochromatic lenses well adapt to changing light conditions. Yellow is more effective in poor light conditions, although lighter the colour of the polarizing film, lower is the percentage of polarization.

The Italians are rather careless when they choose sunglasses

According to a survey carried out by the Sight Defense Commission, eye protection from UV rays is often neglected.
Summer, sun, seaside, lakes, mountain, exotic places. Everyone pays attention to possible skin scaldings, using appropriate products. But what about the eyes?
According to the data gathered by the Sight Defense Commission among a major sample representative of the population, eyes take second place.
The Italian people, in fact, seem to pay little attention to sight care. The 33% of the interviewees do not consider necessary to buy sunglasses to protect themselves from UV rays.
Besides, the 25% of the Italian young between 18 and 24 years, and among them women in particular, states that they have bought sunglasses over the last two years outside the professional field, relying on stalls or pedlars, who crowd beaches and tourist places above all in summer.
This kind of purchase, most of the times from abusive sellers, often coincides with sunglasses that, being very cheap, do not meet the necessary safety requirements, as far as both lenses and frames are concerned.
Surprisingly, the 87% of the interviewees maintains that they are aware of the low quality and the possible damages to the eyes, but this does not change their behaviour at purchase time, which is made superficially above all by young people and women.
For those who are under 35, the key factors in the choice of sunglasses are the price (16,2%) and the aesthetics (15,3%), which can lead to a hasty purchase.
Another alarming datum is that the 10,6% of the Italians among 35 and 44 years would buy a pair of sunglasses for their child from stalls (a datum which rises up to 12,8% for only women of this age).

Snow sports

As a consequence of the recent snow sports popularity, a wide range of lenses has been introduced into the market. Both sky and snow produce blue light. Short wavelenght blue light disperses and reduces visual acuity at distance.
The attenuation of blue light enhances contrast and brilliance, particularly in the sun, without contrast and in presence of mist. In general, brown, copper and amber tones favour the spotting of the variable boundaries and relative consistency of the snow surface. Orange and red hues are suited to cloudy days. Another problem is snow reverberation. Once visual experts believed that polarized lenses were not the best solution for skiers and snow-boarders, since they do not allow to spot out the reflection caused by ice.
However, most of today experts agree that ice is easier to locate, as it appears darker than snow, when polarized lenses -which enhance the contrast- are on. If one avoids darker polarization, the contrast between snow and ice is even greater. Mirror lenses, too, are effective, as they can reduce the reverberation. Metallized mirror lenses, for instance, increase the general absorption of the lenses.
Greater the density of the covering, greater the absorption of light, something to take into account when choosing the colour of the lenses.
Another kind of mirror treatment, the dielectric one, causes reflection without absorption. This kind of treatment can be used to filter specific chromatic-wavelenght and strengthen even more the contrast.

The importance of colour in sports glasses

A multicolor rainbow for sports glasses.

Many sport-lovers do not pay attention to money when they have to buy up-to-date tools which can improve their performances.
Since a good vision is a key factor to optimize one’s performances, glasses should be the first item of the purchase list.
Like for any other specific tool, the choice of the right lenses for a particular activity takes time and commitment. The reason for this is that, as far as sports glasses are concerned, “universal” lenses do not exist.
On the contrary, there are colours or specific treatments that are ideal for every kind of sports activity.
Optics and optometrists are the figures who best can help athletes (both professional and not) to choose the most appropriate lenses, able to filter light according to specific needs.
The attention that these professional figures can offer represents a significant advantage in comparison with department stores, mail orders and other non-professional retailers which deal with sport glasses.
High-performance lenses manufacturers spot out the specific visual requirements for any kind of sport to produce effective lenses, opthalmic or afocal.
In order to guarantee an appropriate visual acuity, the manufacturers of opthalmic lenses and pigmantations have developed various colours and polarization alternatives, strengthening the vision according to different needs.
