The hypermetropic eyeHow does it manifest itself??

With the blurred vision of far away objects, but most of all of those at close distance. In the case of slight hypermetropy, one can see correctly in the distance but at the expense of strain and visual fatigue.

Definition

Hypermetropy is the condition of an eye in which, when the accomodation is relaxed, the image of a point at infinity is projected behind the retina as shown below.

Schema of the hypermetropic eye

Causes

Hypermetropy may be caused by a axially too-short eye while the refraction is normal, or by insufficient refraction. It does not only exist when the dioptric power is low or the eye is too short, but because the refractive power is low for this length or the length is insufficient for this refactive power. The real emmetropy is so rare that, excluding those cases in which a myopia is already diagnosed, practically all other eyes are to be considered hypermetropic. In a next post I will explain the axial hypermetropy and that of curvature.

Which lenses to chose?

The lenses which correct hypermetropy are positive and convergent thus bringing the focus of the image back on the retina. These lenses are thicker at the center than at the sides. Today, thanks to today’s design and construction material, very thin and flat lenses are available which are also very light.

Essilor Lineis 1.74

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

The new essilor 1.74 lensesThe new Essilor Lineis 1.74 lens is adaptable to all ametropies e in particular for the severe ametropies, its strong points are:

  • 1.74 is the best refraction index on the market
  • Very thin and light.
  • Special effect reducing “eye enlargement”.
  • Total protection against UV rays.

Many ametropies are not satisfied of their actual equipment, especially for aesthetical reasons. This is particularly true for ametropies with strong corrections, who desire to be able to wear their glasses every day, in all circumstances with a perfect optical correction in a sense of harmony with their glasses.

A considerable percentage of those wearing glasses have strong expectations for an aesthetic but excellent eyesight,

ESSILOR’S TECHNOLOGY AND DEPENDABILITY

  1. Material 1.74: the highest organic index available on the market.
  2. A tested asferic design such as for the As Stylis 1.67, with an exceptional eyesight quality.
  3. Total UV protection.

ABSOLUTE COMFORT AND AESTHETICS

Significant reduction of the eye “enlargement” effect: the phenominom, feared by high ipermetropies, is attenuated thanks to the cumulative index, of the asphericity and the curvature and thickness reduction between the eye and the lens. Result: for a sf. +5,00 lens a reduction of “enlargement” of the eye by 16% in comparison to a standard lens. A lens treated systematically with the Crizal Alizè, is therefore exceptionally transparent, scratch-resistanti, anti-reflex and very easy to clean.

ULTRA THIN

50% thinner than a standard lens. On average, 10% thinner than an AS Stylis 1,67 and a mineral-glass lens. For the myopics, a thinness equivalent to that of a glass lens of 1.8 while weighing less!

THE FLATTER LENS

The flattest of all lenses: for the myopics, there is up to 10 times less curve with respect to a mineral high-index lens. For the ipermetropics, a gain of up to 2 dioptres in comparison to a mineral lens of 1.8 of the same power.

The myopic eyesight

How does one know to be myopic?

When images of far-away objects are blurred and those of near-by objects are sharply defined.

Definition.

The eye is myopic when, with completely relaxed accommodation, parallel rays emitted from a hypothetically point in the inifinite, the image of that point is projected before the retina, in the vitreous humour.

Causes for myopia.

Myopia can result from a too long axial length (longer eyebulb), while the refractive power is normal or the length of the bulb is normal and the refractive power is too high. The result is the same because the focal distance is always inferior to the distance between the principal point and the retina. In any case myopia is always caused by the refraction power being is excessive in relation to the length of the eye and not because the eye is too long or too refractive.

Which lenses are right?

The lenses that correct myopia are negative and divergent in order to carry the image back on the retina for a perfect focus. The lenses are thicker at the edges than in the center. Once lenses against myopia were very thick at the edges and ugly. Today, thanks to new design and material there are very thin lenses that are light and leave a charming look unaltered.

UV radiations, the most serious injuries

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

Let's put the spotlight on the most serious injuries caused by UV radiationCateratta is the world’s first cause of blindness. It is always being associated with age, but the accelerating factors and the development of cateratta are, without doubt, exposure to the sun and UV rays. Prolongued exposure to the sun, besides an aging of the eyelids, can be especially harmful in this area and facilitate the appearance of carcinoma. Our face is continuously exposed to light, not only in summer, and the skin around the eye is particularly thin and delicate.

Pay attention to children! Children are particularly subject to the harmful effects of UV rays. For children the crystal, i.e., the “lens” in the eye that enables us to focalize an object, is in formation till the age of 12. Therefore, the eyes of our children are particularly delicate and can suffer fast and serious sunburns. It is also important that small children are not exposed to direct sunlight and that, besides wearing a good pair of sunglasses, they are protected by a visor cap.

Numerous medical ophtalmologists in the world study the effects of UV rays on the eye and the discovery of the risks of solar light is one of the best results of ophmaltologistic research.
In fact, it offers the promise of a better protection of the eyesight applying the best medicine of all: preventive medicine… The best news is that there is a possibility to protect oneself against these devastating diseases, without impacting the normal eyesight functions but simply using the right type of sunglasses.

UV damages: Keratitis and Conjunctivitus

Keratitis and Conjunctivitus

Keratitis:
An intense pain of the eyes that open with difficulty and seem full of sand, are the symptoms of keratitis for those who are exposed to the sun for long hours at the beach without adequate eye protection. The long exposure heats and dries the eye, provoking serious problems to the epithalamic cells.

Conjunctivitis:

Swollen, red, burning and itchy eyes are the manifestation of conjunctivitis that can also be caused by wind. Conjunctivitis is normally healed in a couple of days but must be cured immediately before it becomes a bacterial infection which is much harder to cure.
To avoid them it is best to use sunglasses. It is a fast and reliable method to avoid these damages.
