Afakia Art 5
Let’s also remember that there exists a compensation for aberrational effects on the cornea and the chrystal (one corrects too much, the other too little) but the individual difference is such that it makes no sense to establish an average value. Anyway, the influence of the spherical aberration on the chrystal has been asserted by experiments that have demonstrated how, with varying accomodations, one passes from undercorrection to overcorrection of the retinal image. There exists also another phenomenum caused by the prismatic effect of a lens. That effect increases with the angle of thge prism, i.e., the power of the lens.
The phenomenum is called “Jack in the box” or also “Roving Ring scotoma”.

The dimensions of this “ring” around the visual field depends on several factors: the lens’s power, its dimensions, size of the pupil, distance to the corneal apex, the configuration and the thickness of the lens.

One of the inconveniences of the above described scotoma is that it tends to move independently from the rotation of the eye. If the eyebulb rotates laterally 30 degrees, the scotoma turns to the inside by 20 degrees. When the individual sees an object, in order to bring the image on the fovea, he sees a dark spot. He then moves the eye, more or less disorderly, to focus better on the image. Aspheric lenses have been made (panorama lenses) but their success has been modest.

A partial solution can be found correcting the aphakia with contact lenses.

How to measure the exposure of the eyes to UV rays

Friday, January 26th, 2007

Since quite some time it is said that U.V.B. can hurt the eyes and there were founded theoretical and experimental reasons for it. But epidemic evidence could be confirmed only in the last years with precise measurements. In fact, a so-called personalized dosimetry has been developed. Contact lenses are made of material that absorbs UV rays. This absorption darkens the lenses, thus allowing to measure this darkening and thus to know the amount of UV rays to which the eye has been exposed during the day.

What should one know about UV rays?

Thursday, January 25th, 2007
  1. The higher the sun, the higher is the level of UV irradiation. This means that the intensity of UV rays varies with the sun’s position. For example, at noon the UV rays are particularly strong.
  2. Consequently, in the areas of the globe where the sun shines prependicularly on the earth, like on the equator, the UV rays are even stronger.

  3. They penetrate the atmosphere even when it is cloudy. In this case, even if less intense, it doesn’t mean that we are not exposed. In some situations the clouds could even act as a reflector, increasing diffusion of the light and thus the level of UV intensity.

  4. The UV radiation may increase when reflected or diffused by a surface: snow reflects 80% of the radiation, sand 20% and the strand 25%!

  5. Going higher, less atmosphere can absorb the UV rays. That is why, when we go in the mountains, every 1000 metres of altitude the UV radiation increases by 10-12%.

Is the sun good or bad for your health?

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Contrary to what we thought in the past, when exposure to the sun rays was considered to bring only benefits, today studies and clinical evidence have convinced us that sunshine is beneficial only under certain conditions and in certain situations.

The notable increase of cataracts at an ever earlier age, with respect to the past, and the diagnosis of an increasing number of senile macular degenerations are without doubts to be attributed to UV rays: the part of the visbile light called “blue light”.

The gamma of UV radiations cover that part of the electromagnetic spectrum that comprises the 200-400 nm wavelengths. In photobiology this interval is subdivided in three parts:

  1. UV.C This dangerous zone is situated at the shortest wavelengths.

  2. UV.B The central part around the 300 nm (precisely from 280 to 315 nm).

  3. UV.A Ultraviolet light that is adjacent to visible light (400 nm).

In a next post I will describe in particular the UVB and UVA gamma to explain how to protect yourself from these radiations.
